Being a writer is often solitary work. As a novelist, so much of my time is spent on my own, writing and researching. Part of why I enjoy working as a journalist, alongside writing novels, is that the profession revolves around relationships and communication.

I once interviewed the filmmaker David Lynch. The difficult thing about interviewing someone like Lynch, who’s been interviewed so many times, is getting him to tell you something new.
