Leadership 6 habits we’re embracing – or ditching – in 2024 Our top tips for reevaluating your relationship to work and resetting your professional mindset By FW Leadership Our top tips for reevaluating your relationship to work and resetting your professional mindset By FW Previous article Clare Bowditch and her curious career Next article Building a career with longevity in mind The new year is – quite literally – an annual opportunity to reconsider what’s working for you and what isn’t. So why not use the new year momentum to reset your professional mindset? What if you used this time to reconsider your career’s direction, refresh your goals and refocus your strategies for getting there? Here are six habits we’re either embracing or ditching to reset and make 2024 our best year yet: 1 EMBRACE Being our genuine selves at work Authenticity in the workplace not only fosters trust but helps lay the foundation for stronger and more positive relationships. In fact, a study by Berkeley University in the US determined true confidence stems from self-trust. Those who approach life from a genuine place are more confident in their abilities. Why? Because they can be more honest with themselves. By being more genuine you know what you can bring to a role and where to improve. Forget a ‘work persona’, we are who we are. As Baby Boomers continue to retire, Gen Z steps into their place, making room for Millennials and Gen Z. Each of these generations brings a knowledge and skill set unmatched by the other. Take a moment to consider that? Rather than putting Baby Boomers or Gen X out to pasture, imagine a workplace where generations of knowledge were nurtured and learned from. Too young? As a woman it feels like there’s never a ‘right’ age to be a professional success. The age barrier needs to be demolished with an overhaul of what age means in terms of success. Yet, a change in mindset and approach could start your year off with renewed vigour. While that may sound a tad melodramatic, let’s put it into practice. If you regularly approach a work task with negative expectations then you’re not giving yourself the best chance to succeed. Why not consider a positive or even neutral approach? Remember, you have a choice. Yet when it comes to our careers, thinking about making a chance and putting that change into action are two very different activities. It’s easy to see change in a larger form, something that feels unobtainable and, at times, fearful. Yet, breaking change down into more palatable, bite size portions can help. Something as simple and commonplace as changing your approach can have great benefits. (ICYMI, some legend has literally created a website to do exactly this.) One of the most pressing concerns for today’s employees is burnout and hustle culture, especially at a time when the option to work is almost always at our fingertips. So how do workers, and leaders, foster positive, productive working environments in uncertain times? Boundaries and respect.
